Hong Kong as a city is just as crowded and bustling as any other large city in China. But it does not feel like Southeast Asia, let alone China. The currency is not the same as mainland China. Credit card slips give the option of charging is US dollars or local Hong Kong dollars. The façades of the skyscrapers become giant video screens at night; light shows flash everywhere. The 10th tallest commercial building in the world, Sky 100, at 103 stories is located in Hong Kong and gives a spectacular view, day or night, of the city.
Beneath the surface there is still the Chinese culture. On our second day in the city our private guide took us to the places his mother shops for groceries—an open air street market; we also saw the flower market overflowing with orchids and the street where pet birds are bought or traded. And we also visited the nunnery set in a beautiful garden, where skyscrapers poke up behind the stunning temple buildings.
