Burnie was our first stop in Tasmania, the island off the southern coast of Australia. Burnie is primarily known for four things: growing pyrethrum that is the primary ingredient in bug sprays and lice killers; opium for medicinal purposes for export; Table Cape and lumber plantations. In fact, most of Australia’s and New Zealand's ports have stacks and stacks and stacks of logs for export. They all are grown for harvesting and then replanted.
There may be two other highlights in Burnie: the Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden and Cadbury Chocolates. The latter used to be very prevalent in that part of the world, but has now completely vanished from the Southern Hemisphere. The former was not in blooming season, but was still quite lovely when we visited.
