In February of 2011 Christchurch experienced a 7.1 earthquake. In November of 2016 the city was shaken by a 6.3 earthquake. Damage was extensive in both instances and 185 people were killed in the first quake. The city is still rebuilding and some areas still show the damage. Even so, people continue on; the city is beautiful and charming.
There is a tram that runs through the central business district and serves tea, crumpets and finger sandwiches on its journey. There is a 500 acre botanical garden that has an extraordinary variety of trees, along with other plants and flowers. The weather is pleasant and, except for the visual reminders, it is as if the earthquakes had never happened.
