The southwest coast of the southern island of New Zealand is known for its primitive beauty. This includes inland waterways bounded by steep, mist shrouded slopes down the sides of which are numerous waterfalls. Others are enclosed by forested walls and blue skies.
Our cruise was able to sail into Milford, Doubtful and Dusky sounds. We say “able to sail into” because over half the time the waterways are too fogged in to allow for safe passage. There is a very short video behind the first photo to the left. One can see why the movies “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” were filmed in New Zealand.
