Hobart is located on the southern part of Tasmania. It seems to have more going for it than Burnie, including nicer weather.
We had a spectacular view of this very southern part of the world from Mount Wellington. The day we were there the winds gusted up to 50 mph. A large part of the city is also part of the “Queen’s Domain”, a vast parkland area that contains the 200-year old Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.
One of the highlights of our trip was a special nocturnal visit to the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. This private organization specializes in healing injured or unwanted native animals and then returning them to their very specific habitat. This is not always possible (the location may be unknown or the animal will not survive in the wild), so the site provides a home. There is a large population of kangaroos here and hand-feeding them is welcomed. And by the way, Tasmanian Devils get a bad rap. They are fairly docile and only look aggressive around others of their kind.
