In 1931 a 7.1 magnitude earthquake and subsequent fire completely destroyed the small town of Napier. On the positive side, the earthquake caused the bay to settle and 7000 acres of land that were underwater were now available for rebuilding. At the time the cheapest construction consisted of Art Deco and some art nouveau. Consequently, most of the buildings and homes are in these styles.
In keeping with the motif, we took an extensive auto tour of Napier in a 1939 Packard, complete with period-costumed driver. Afterwards we walked the pedestrian friendly downtown area.
