Tauranga is a beautiful coastal city with miles of beaches and very expensive modern beach homes. About 50 miles outside of the city in the town of Rotorua is the Te Pui Maori Cultural Center. Along with cultural music demonstrations, the site is a school for about 30 select students. These students learn the Maori arts of woodworking, weaving, painting and sculpture. Once proficient they return to their local homes and share their skills with others, thus preserving the traditions.
Also at the cultural center is a large collection of natural mud springs and geysers.
