Shanghai Jewish Ghetto

How many Jews in Shanghai today?  Not exactly known since China does not ask a person’s religion.  The last surviving resident of the Ghetto still living in China died in 1982.  There are other survivors in other parts of the world, including the United States.

This corner and the one in the photo to the right are the only remaining structures of the original Ghetto.

The Ghetto had no walls and with permission, the residents could leave and return.  Permission by the Japanese commander was rare.

The interior of the renovated synagogue is seen in the photo to the right. It is part of the entire museum complex

Yes, there is a donated Torah in the Ark.

This is the courtyard of the Shanghai Jewish Refugee Museum.  The walls are paneled with the names of the residence of the Ghetto.

This Proclamation by the occupying Japanese established that “stateless”refugees were to be confined.  This meant Jews who came after 1938.
