Cartagena was our first stop on the Spanish mainland (remember, Canary Islands are part of Spain). Of the three cities in Spain that we visited, this one seemed to have the most outside and non-Catholic influences. Its early origins were Roman and there are many Roman archeologic sites—a coliseum and an amphitheater to name two. Building on the island is often halted and subsumed by the government if any historical artifacts are uncovered during construction.
Many of the streets in town are pedestrian only and there are lots of cafes and shoe stores (!?). The city has tourists, but does not come across as too touristy.
