The last snow of significance in Marin County was in 1976; Ira was there too.

In January of this year Michele and Joe took a 4 day trip to Mexico (just north of Puerto Vallarta). Luanne and Ira flew to Chicago to babysit their grandson Elijah, not quite two-years old. They arrived just as the polar vortex swept through that part of the Midwest.
For the first two days they were there Elijah’s school was closed due to extremely cold temperatures. People were advised not to go outside; frostbite to exposed skin could occur within seconds. On the second day Ira dressed to go across the street to the neighborhood grocery store. See the comparison photo to the left.
Meanwhile Joe and Michele are basking in sunny 80 degree weather in Mexico.
When Ira and Luanne returned to sunny San Rafael, to commemorate their adventure, the County of Marin decided to celebrate the experience by recreating (partly) the weather, with a dusting of snow on the hills.
All in all it was quite an adventure and everyone had a good time.

This sidebar is titled “128 Degrees of Separation”. This was literally the number of temperature degrees that separated the Palter parents and the Lansing grandparents: 80℉ - (-48℉) = 128℉. But it is also an allusion to the concept of “6 Degrees of Separation”.
