The name comes from the Latin for “dogs”. The early native settlers had them and when the Europeans arrived, this is what they noticed and named the 7 islands after these pets.
We visited two of the islands, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. The first is a beach oriented tourist attraction, the second is volcanic in its nature.
We drove around much of the island. Since it was Good Friday, there was not much traffic, but not too much was open. We did see a rare triple-spired neo-Gothic church and the beaches (the sand is actually smoothed stones). We lunched at a very interesting plantation where they grow their own coffee beans, oranges and wine grapes. They also bottle a few different wines (mediocre!). Everything is hand-picked and processed on the premises.
There is also a street area with beautiful tiled benches and large decorative tile maps of all of the Canary Islands.
